History

In 1836, Augustus and John Allen bought 6,642 acres of land near Buffalo Bayou with the desire to form a new city.  They decided on the name Houston, from the popular general and former President of Texas, Sam Houston.  Houston incorporated the very next year, with waterborne business being incredibly lucrative.

In the later part of the 19th century, the cotton industry catapulted Houston’s economy and spurred the growth of various rail lines in and out of Houston.  In the 20th century, President Roosevelt injected $1 million into the local economy by improving the Houston Ship Channel and in 1914 the Port of Houston was open for business.

With the advent of World War II, the demand for petroleum and rubber products lead to great expansion of Houston industries.  Also on the rise, various medical based organizations, led by the M.D. Anderson Foundation.  By the 1960’s NASA’s “Manned Spacecraft Center” was established and opened the door to the development of the area’s aerospace industry.  Built in 1965, the Astrodome was the world’s first indoor “domed” stadium.

Houston faced economic hardship in the mid-to-late 80’s as the price of oil plummeted.  As a result, Houston refocused energy in the health/medical and aerospace industries.  In 2005, Houston took-in nearly 150,000 New Orleans refugees from Hurricane Katrina.
