History

The city of Katy was originally called Cane Island; supposedly in reference to the sugar cane and rice that were once grown in vast amounts there.  There is still a waterway, located west of downtown, that is named Cane Island Creek.  To this day, Katy celebrates the Rice Harvest Festival every October.

The main railroad through Katy was completed in 1893 and the city incorporated in 1945.  According to the Gadberry Group, “10 from 2010,” Katy was ranked as one of the ten highest growth areas in the United States.
