The Woodlands, Texas

The Woodlants is not an actual city, but rather a Master Planned Community. It is mainly within the city of Houston, but small potions extend into Conroe and Shenandoah.  As of the 2010 census, The Woodland had a population of over 93,800.

History

The Woodlands began in 1974 as an extension of Mitchell Energy and Development as effort to draw city dwellers to nature and a higher quality of suburban life.  In 1997, Morgan Stanley and Crescent Real Estate Equities  formed a joint venture and acquired The Woolands Corporation.  Most recently, in 2011, the Howard Hughes Development Corporation bought The Woodlands.

Several companies have taken root in The Woodlands, such as: Hewitt Associates, Chevron Phillips, Huntsman, Anadarko, Lexicon Pharmaceuticals, Chicago Bridge and Iron, and the Woodforest National Bank.  There are also vibrant shopping areas and restaurants in The Woodlands, serviced by climate-controlled water taxis known as "Water Cruisers."
In an effort to retain its autonomy, The Woodlands pays the City of Houston several million dollars to fund general improvements.  Houston has agreed to release The Woodlands from its extraterritorial jurisdiction in 2014.  The Woodlands entered a similar arrangement with Conroe for $320,000.
